Listening Migrates to Mobile

There is a dramatic shift underway in audio content consumption. While broadcast radio maintains a big audience, hours spent listening are consistently declining. The loss in listener hours fell by 25.3% from 2007-12 according to the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB).

By contrast, Edison Research data shows that digital platforms and mobile audio app usage grew 214% since 2008. This growth is leading to both increased overall audio consumption time, as well as displacing tradition audio sources such as radio and MP3. Importantly, mobile has quickly become the king of digital audio, encompassing 64% of total listening hours.

The XAPPmedia research team pulled together market data from Arbitron, BIA/Kelsey, Digital Music News, Edison Research, eMarketer, Forrester, RAB, Triton Digital and Internet radio publishers to create an infographic that provides a comprehensive view of this market shift. Take a look and see how consumer behavior is reshaping audio consumption.
